Fan-Sponsored K-Pop Billboards

Billboard advertising continues to be one of the most prominent forms of advertising globally, with advertisers ranging from parents wanting to wish their children a happy birthday, to major brands like Apple advertising new products, and everything in between.

Recently, even K-pop fans worldwide have been dipping their toes into billboard advertising, on behalf of their favorite artists.

In the past few years, K-pop (Korean pop music) has been growing more and more popular as a genre across the globe. Spotify reports that between 2014 and 2020, K-Pop’s share of streaming had increased by 1,800%, with the United States being the country that streams it the most.

Fans of groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, and TWICE have become an increasingly prominent entity on social media, and have even started to extend their love of their favorite idols off of the internet, and onto billboards.

Notably since 2017, K-pop superfans have been renting out both static and digital billboard space to celebrate their favorite idols, like this multi-story digital tribute in Times Square back in 2018:

Typically connected via social media, fans across the globe consistently manage to work together in order to gather funds, create art, and successfully coordinate with advertising companies to celebrate and promote their favorite groups. Then, they go visit the site, take photos, and post on social media to celebrate the advertisement in all its glory.

But K-pop superfans know no bounds, and the fan-sponsored billboards don’t stop at Times Square, or even the United States. Fans have successfully posted ads in cities like Manila and even Seoul.

While K-pop continues to increase in popularity across the globe, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more and more fan-sponsored ads pop up in major—and maybe even smaller—cities across the United States.
